I will be adding to this post daily to document my journey on Mounjaro

Mounjaro, a recently introduced medication in Canada, is not presently FDA-approved for weight loss; its approval is limited to addressing Type 2 diabetes. Currently, Manitoba Health or my insurance company does not provide insurance coverage for Mounjaro. However, there is an expectation that this may change within the next 3-6 months.

Starting Point:

In 2019, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes while weighing over 300lbs, I faced a critical decision – succumb to illness or embark on a journey to wellness. Opting for the latter, my path involved significant weight loss through diet and exercise, shedding over 130lbs. Currently, a few stubborn pounds stand between me and my goal, including preparation for skin removal surgery.

My recent addition of Mounjaro, suggested by my doctor , has now become a focal point in my ongoing health journey. Documenting this process daily on my blog, I share the highs, lows, and side effects, aiming to inspire and inform.

Feel free to connect or follow my Instagram @livewell_with_michelle for a glimpse into the past four years.

My Journey Starts here

The First 30 Days on 5ml Mounjaro Injections

First Injection - 10.11.2023

On November 10, 2023, I took my first 5ml injection of Mounjaro tirzepatide, transitioning from the 1ml Ozempic. Despite the difference in delivery methods (no preloaded pens in Canada), the self-injection was manageable. Noteworthy, the higher dosage brought immediate light-headedness. Resting well, I woke up rejuvenated.

Side Effects : light headedness

Day 1 - 11.11.2023

Starting the day with a leg workout, I faced an upset stomach post breakfast – eggs, rye bread, a clementine, and Isolate Powder with strawberries and coconut water. The day unfolded with a persistent upset stomach, prompting caution in food intake. Despite lacking appetite, hydration remained a priority. Focusing on vitamins and minimal food, the journey with Mounjaro unfolds. Tomorrow brings new possibilities.

Side Effects - Upset stomach , limited food intake

Day 2 - 12.11.2023

Today, I woke up feeling refreshed. Attending a fundraising brunch had me concerned about my food options, but opting for the vegan choice allowed me to enjoy breakfast. I prioritized hydration throughout the day, swapping my usual Starbucks for green tea—time to cut back on sugar.

Focusing on better choices, especially reducing sugar intake, is crucial. Planning my week's meals involves lean protein and lots of greens, courtesy of Costco.

Dinner comprised of a salad and 6oz of chicken, and all seems well so far. Trying my favourite high-protein snack later—yo-jam (1/2 cup plain Skyr Greek yogurt and 1tsp sugar-free jam) total game changer !

Food noise is minimal; my relationship with food has improved over the past year—I eat not a lot but just enough.

Side Effects - Experiencing slight side effects, but overall, I feel much better.

Day 3 - 12.11.2023

Had a good day. Spent two hours in the gym focusing on my upper body—such a fantastic stress reliever.

Breakfast was a modest 1/2 cup of coffee. Lunch consisted of a salad with chicken, while dinner was a low-fat turkey wrap packed with veggies. Stayed hydrated, finishing the day with sugar-free Gatorade. Surprisingly, no snack cravings, just feeling a bit tired.

Overall, my body seems to be adjusting well to the new medication.

Side Effects - none to report

Day 4 -13.11.2023

Today was fantastic! I slept exceptionally well, better than I have in a long time. The scale is down by 3 lbs. I'm thrilled to see where this journey leads me. Achieving my target is within sight, proving that anything is possible. You just need to want it badly enough and work hard to attain it.

Only reminder is to eat , I'm not hungry but I know I need fuel to fuel my body. I'm ensuring I get my protein in daily to achieve the results I want. Macro tracking is key to success .

I'll continue sharing my journey, inspiring others not to give up, even on tough days. Tomorrow is always a new day. Just believe, believe in yourself!

Side Effects - none to report

Day 5 - 14.11.2023

My body has adjusted smoothly to Mounjaro. I'm having three light meals a day, focusing on incorporating sufficient protein. Continuously tracking macros to ensure proper fueling, I'm sleeping better and waking up refreshed.

The second dose and weigh-in are scheduled for Friday, and I'm feeling optimistic.

Day 6 15.11.2023

My eating habits are getting better—I'm staying mindful of what I consume, focusing on lean proteins and plenty of greens. I've cut down on carbs and increased water intake. Tomorrow, I'll weigh in to see the progress of the first 7 days.

My second injection is tomorrow evening, opting for evening shots in case of side effects, allowing time to rest. Many of you have asked about Mounjaro and its cost in Canada. I'll share a post on that this weekend, including co-pay details directly from Mounjaro.

Feeling good overall and looking forward to the week ahead.

Side Effects - none to report

Day 7 17.11.2023

5ml dose

Week 1 - Completed , Weigh In -3 lbs.

Administered my second injection tonight, experienced mild lightheadedness compared to the first shot. Hoping for preload pens are in Canada soon.

I will post weekly updates unless significant changes occur. No night cravings, just some dehydration. Improved sleep and waking up well-rested.

I’ll post more details on Mounjaro's cost and a 10% co-pay this weekend. Stay tuned.

Week 2 Update 25.11.2023

Took my second injection on Friday and thrilled to share a total weight loss of 8lbs over the past two weeks. No side effects, and the absence of food cravings is remarkable. Although not hungry, I prioritize hitting my macros —ensuring I get enough protein, fat, and daily carbohydrates. Hydration is a focus with increased water intake. The gym is my passion. Seeing the gains inspires me to keep consistent.

Notably, my body size appears to be decreasing, fueling excitement for the ongoing journey to shed more weight and truly embrace life. Learning to love myself has been a crucial part of this four-year journey, and I’m determined to keep pushing forward. No more giving up on myself—I want to live without regrets and make the most of this one life we have.

Mounjaro Week 3 concludes with the last 5ml injection, marking the beginning of Week 4. Delighted to report a 14lb weight loss with no side effects, just a serene absence of food cravings. Though not always hungry, I ensure daily intake of healthy protein, fats, and carbs. Looking forward to progressing to 7ml next week. Over the past 4 years, my life has transformed from unhealthy and overweight to fit and fabulous. Excited about the future with a newfound embrace of self-love.

Week 4 Update 08.12.2023

See above , week 4 included in week 3

Week 5 Update 08.12.2023

7.5ml dose

Starting on week 5 I have successfully shed 16lbs, maintaining a consistent six-day-a-week gym routine. The journey has been positive. My doctor increased my dose from 5ml to 7.5ml, where I'll remain for the next two months. After that, a decision on progressing to 10ml will be made during my follow-up.

My first 7.5ml dose caused dizziness, but I took it easy that night, and by morning, I felt fine. I experience minimal side effects, occasional sulphur night burps being the exception.

Food cravings are non-existent; I'm never hungry, but I eat 3 meals a day and  I diligently track my daily macros for proper nutrient intake. I incorporate supplement shakes for added protein, understanding the importance of fueling the body, regardless of hunger is essential. Fuel in Fuel out powered by food !

No snacking, no cravings – the best part. Excited to share more updates on my Mounjaro journey as I witness positive changes in my body. I can see the end , and I’m so excited !

Week 6 Update 15.12.2023

On my 6th injection at 7.5, entering week 7 with a total weight loss of 21lbs. Zero food cravings and feeling absolutely amazing.

Eating has become a bit challenging as hunger isn't driving me, but I'm committed to hitting my daily macros with three meals a day. Interestingly, sugar doesn't sit well with me anymore – a surprising but not unwelcome change. No snacking, just lots of water.

Prepping for a Christmas getaway to Mexico, and I couldn't be happier. Rediscovering self-love lost over the years, my confidence is back stronger than ever. It feels like I'm living a whole new life, and I'm genuinely excited about the future, thrilled to embrace every moment. My heart is brimming with joy.
